How do I know if an ad is legitimate? I have heard some may be a trap for scams.

Rental scams are very common. Rather than researching each offer individually you should consider working with an agent. The agent can more easily cut through the scams and show you real listings.

Hi Amy. It is always best to work with an agent even if you are renting. Many agents do not work with rentals but a few do and any of them will be happy to help. Working with a licensed agent will make sure your interests are protected from scams, unreputable property owners and management companies. Thanks for the heads-up and please always report a scam.

Hello Amy. There is a very good chance the renter for this property is a scammer. When I researched the property the information for the listing agent is Jeff Scofield. He updated the information on this property on September 10, 2012. He can be contacted at 585-279-825. I STRONGLY recommend that you contact him to find out if he is aware of the Agent: Ryan Conti, who is trying to rent you the property.…

I am sure after talking to the realtor who is selling the property you will be able to determine the facts and hopefully avoid a scam.

Good Luck

Look for RED FLAGS:

The OWNER is out of town!
Please send money via Western Union!
There is a FOR SALE sign in the front yard!
There is someone living there!
The OWNER's NAME doesn't match the County Records!
The RENT quoted is too low!
