Asked by Ellie, Los Angeles, CA Wed Jul 11, 2012

I am wanting to move to LA from UK but I have no family or friends in LA to co sign the lease. I have enough money to pay for the rent and wont need one but I am un sure about a lot of it. I have family in La Crosse.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Ellie,

One option might be to use a short term extended stay hotel, such as this one:

The benefit is that it is furnished, and it is short term, so no need for a lease. Then, once you start working, it will be easy to qualify for a lease on your own. Best of luck!

Before move to LA from UK, you should have to identify regarding the things like at how much cost you will able to get home at rent, can you find work for you to earn which is worth for paying rental amount of home as well as enough for your living. So ask these questions to yourself before move because if these are set specially your earning source then nothing to be worried.

Ellie it is like anything else, you must earn a living and when you earn a living or have the money you can buy things. I think you might consider a practice run. you come out to visit and see things for what they are first. See if you can find work and see what it all costs. Many people from all over the world come to Southern California, Los Angeles, Hollywood especially and they fall on hard times and end up doing very desperate things to stay alive. Many are start struck by Glitz and glamour when in reality, it is all a facade. I have no idea why you would want to come to Los Angeles where you do not know anyone, but I can say this. It is not what you see on the Television. I have lived in So Cal my Entire life. I know. I think you should do a visit instead and go from there.
Be careful as when some people find out you do not know the rules they may take advantage of you.

Hey Harold, thanks. Yes I plan on getting a job but I will need a house to live in regardless of work. I do plan on coming out to LA a few times before I decide to move. I am young and just want to travel, if things don't work out I'll happily move back home and be able to say I tried it. No regrets. I plan on meeting new people.
I am a little worried about people realizing I 'don't know the rules' but I have my head screwed on and I'll be careful.
Thanks a lot for your input and advice.
