Hello,

I recommend using a reputable agent who is familiar with the rental market in Chicago. Do a Face-time walk through or use Skype so you can see the agent touring the home and at the same time you will be able to direct the agent and ask questions. I do this with a lot of my overseas investors and it works like a charm,

Do not wire anyone funds in exchange for keys - Craig's List scam that happens all the time. Find a leasing agent: my office handles tenant representation if you would like to send along your specific housing requirements.

Best of luck with the relocation!

You will need to select and work with a leasing agent to pinpoint the location that would work best for you. DO NOT try to do this via Trulia or any other website as there are a lot of scams out there right now run by unsrcupulous people who want you to send them money in exchange for keys. These are fake listings. Chicago is way too large a city in which to select an apartment by looking online. Too many neighborhoods to choose from, transportation factors, schools, price points, etc. You have plenty of time. You can't secure an apartment right now for October anyway, as it's way too early. If you'd like some specific advice, please email me at cwilson@koenigstrey.com. Good luck!

Hello,

The most options for you will be on the market 30-45 days before your planned lease start date. Are you planning a trip to Chicago in that time period?

Generally, units are not listed for rent until 60 or less before they will be available . So you would want start your search September for October, or October for December. This is the slow part of the season, so there will be less available to rent, but there will also be less competition for it and you may be able to get a better price from a landlord trying to beat the winter. Also, if you end the lease during the spring or summer, the landlord would be in the peak rental season to look for a new tenant. You may not want to do a longer lease to end the lease in the spring on a unit you have not seen, so see if the landlord will do a shorter lease.

Beware of Craigslist posting. I know a few people who rented unit through there sight unseen and they sometimes do not really exist and you deposits are gone with the wind.

Do you know where you want to live?
Size of unit?
Budget?
Lease length?
Who will pay for the rent - you or your employer?
Are you originally from the USA or first time visitors?
