The California Bureau of Real Estate lets you look up licensees by name, license number, or company:

A cursory search of the name Henry Eli doesn't return any information. You do not need a real estate license to rent a property. My good friend does rentals, however, and often scammers will take the information from one of her listings in an attempt to take advantage of people. Is there a particular address you were interested in? Try a google search and compare the top results for Trulia, Zillow, and Craigslist. If there are inconsistencies, then it's likely a scam.

There is no such person listed as an agent belonging to the SF MLS. Jon gave you a good link for looking up agents. If you need help buying or selling, find a reputable, experienced agent/broker to help you.

If you feel that he does not have the requisite professional experience, it may be a good idea to move on to someone who satisfies your requirement for professional experience.

What professional experience are you looking for? Why do you question his experience? What makes you ask if he is a scam?

You have been well advised to check the Department of Real Estate privately, to determine whether an individual is licensed.

YELP not withstanding, I caution against naming a specific individual on a large online forum and inquiring if he is a “scam”.

He may just be a property owner/landlord... You can go to the California DRE website and plug in his name to see if he is a licensed Realtor in the state of California.. Is he representing himself as such?
