True That, Kimo! But there are realtors who do have a finger on the pulse of the rental market, and they may be able to point you in the right direction.

As a slight FYI, everyone likes to say "use a Realtor" when finding a rental but most Realtors will not spend the hours/days/weeks to find rentals for a client because we almost always get zero compensation for our time.

If anything needs to change there needs to be a way to compensate Realtors who help clients find rentals. Perhaps a Rental Listing Agreement that spells out compensation, until then, it's a bit presumptuous to tell people to find a Realtor to assist them in searching for a rental when we know 99.9% of Realtors won't because of zero compensation (mostly).

Always look for or to a licensed Realtor, Agent, or Property Management company. You can cross check them and/or find them in the DCCA website for active business licenses.

If you are dealing with an owner, please check the Tax records online for their identity and ferret credibility.

If they are off island, do not sent money!! If they are on a boat, especially, (this is a ruse often used), do not write back. It is a SCAM!!!

Even if they give you the key, please check that they are not in a foreclosure, distressed situation as you may get evicted after paying the actual owner.

What are you looking for? Perhaps we can help you out.

Never ever give your money to someone you have never met without vetting out the person.
Caveat Emptor!

In my opinion, it is safer to deal with a Realtor or company than dealing with an owner.

Very few websites do any due diligence on the posting or poster of the rentals, nor are they legally obligated to do so yet. They are typically free and open so anyone scammer can wreak havoc, so beware.

Good luck!

All of them monitor to some extent, but they they don't have the time or staff to check each ad.
If you find a fraudulent ad, report it or flag it. Otherwise it will stay there and someone else may become a scam victim.
Also, if the price is more than say 25% below the price of other rentals, it is most likely a scam.
Go with a property manager, and never rent or put a deposit on anything until you see it.

The best source would be one in which advertisers have to PAY money to advertise, so your local paper. Scammers tend to not spend hundreds of dollars in advertising.

Second best source, http://hicentral.com/properties-for-rent.html

This site is the public's version of the MLS system and requires a Real Estate agent licensed with the HBR to post a listing. This gives you more accountability than a place where the public can insert listings or some scammer from Botswana just throwing listings online.
