When I have a rental listing I have to protect my client by requiring a credit check. The prospective tenant pays for the credit check. If you think your credit is bad, you may be wasting your money. You may have luck looking on Craigslist or by asking friends. I suggest that when you speak to a landlord, be honest about your situation. There may be extenuating circumstances that caused your poor credit such as job loss, divorce or illness. You just may find a landlord that is willing to give you a chance. Good luck!
