Why don't apartment managers tell you the types of people who live there?

Asked by Trulia Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV Wed Nov 7, 2012

Why can't apartment managers disclose who their tenants are. They keep it a secret. Is it against the law?

Yes to a certain extent it is against the law. People are so diverse. For example, if a landlord says a lot of single mothers live here...that would be saying a lot of single women with children live there. That compromises confidential information and can also be a possible safety hazard. If a landlord says a lot of seniors live here, that could be an indication that seniors are preferred and/or applications may be rejected for younger people/families.

Ask your landlord specific questions and if they are able to answer, they will. Also visit the complex at various hours of the day. Morning, noon, evening and night. This will definitely say a lot about the complex.

It's very much so against the law, it's against Fair Housing Laws, and privacy laws.

Would you like your name, number, age, race, sex, orientation, etc, distributed to others? I think not.

What types of people living there is a hard question to answer. How exactly do you define types of people without getting into trouble about fair housing standards? I believe that is more the reason people won't answer - it is not a secret but just not something that is normally disclosed as it can't really be defined without sounding biased towards or against someone. As long as they pay their rent, don't disturb the neighbors and take care of the property, a landlord doesn't care what "type" of people live in their units.
