How would you advise a single female about renting a home close to downtown Atlanta that has burglar bars on windows and doors? Bad idea?

As a woman living in Atlanta (and I used to live in Smyrna) I can tell you that the burglar bars are probably because the house is located in one of the high crime areas. Downtown has small pockets of neighborhoods (the way Cobb County has subdivisions) and some neighborhoods are safe while others are in turmoil. I'm looking for a new place as well but I'm familiar with all of the neighborhoods and every time I see the bars on a window of a house for rent, the neighborhood is one I know to have a higher crime rate.

All that being said, most of the crime is home and car burglaries, not crimes against people. If the home is well protected and you aren't driving a car prone to theft.... you may not have an issue. there have been a few late night person-to-person robberies so always keep your eyes open and travel in groups in the wee hours if you can.

I would think that if you are questioning it/worrying about it already, you have your answer. There are plenty of housing choices in Atlanta in areas that are both affordable and safe.

Hi Emartin,

IT depends on what you are comfortable with. Burglar bars are meant to keep thieves out. If you are comfortable with it, there is no problem. You may want to explore your options though because Atlanta has a lot to offer as far as beautiful properties that don't have a restricted view with burglar bars. See what else is out there before you commit just because its close to downtown.

Are you sure you want to find a neighborhood that has burglar bars on windows and doors? Sometimes that's a sign of an less safe neighborhood.

Are you talking about renting an entire home for yourself? Have you thought of renting just a room in a house with a family? That way, you wouldn't be alone and would have that family as protection.
