How much is the security deposit for an apartment rental? I am so clueless with all of this, been a home owner for years.

It is negotiable but majority of the landlord/pm companies will ask for a security deposit equal to first months rent as Keith &Kinsey Schulz mentioned.

If the unit is furnished there is usually an additional deposit requested.

If you have bad credit or bad rental history they may ask for an additional deposit as well.

Again all of this is negotiable between both parties.

typically equal to the monthly rental amount.

With Single Family Residences, I have seen one months rent. However, in Texas there are a lot of property management companies that will also give specials on the amount of the deposit required for an apartment. I would always suggest seeing if they are offering and special "look and lease" programs. It never hurts to ask!

Usually one month's rent.

Unlike most Landlords, we DO NOT charge the same dollar amount as a month rent....why??? Too many times the renter will leave without paying his/her last month, as they confuse (purposely or not) the rent with the security deposit. We always charge a difference of maybe $50-$100 MORE than the rent. Hope this helps.

As a landlord, I normally charge my tenants a security deposit equal to one months rent. This can vary widely though.
