Jamaica Plain is a great place to invest and the orange line runs right into the center of JP (drops you off at back bay station):
The Fenway is very affordable and there is a green line that runs on huntington and at kenmore square (drops you at copley in back bay) :
Allston and Brighton are right next to each other and have access to the green line:

Before you get fully invested in living in Southie, you should check out the entire city and all of the options available to you. The Back Bay is accessible via the green, red and orange lines. If you don't like taking the bus, you don't have to. There are deals in all parts of the city not just Southie.

Iâ€™ve been a South Boston (Southie) resident for 10+ years and one of my Offices is situated in Copley Square in the heart of Back Bay, so I am very familiar with the commuting options, normally 8-15mins maximum..
South Boston is certainly one of the more affordable and trendy neighborhoods in Boston with close proximity to Downtown & Back Bay. South Boston does have many â€œsub-neighborhoodsâ€ which will affect your commute and Southie is also split in half; known as East side and West side.
There are 2 South Boston T-Stations on the Red Line (Broadway & Andrew Square); check out http://www.MBTA.com
Both are just a few very quick stops to Park Street, and then you can connect to a Green Line train into Back Bay, or simply walk from Park Street.
West side of South Boston is closer to both train stations, but the East side does have bus routes that can quickly get you into Back Bay or Downtown.
