Can I afford a home here?

My daughter and I are new to the Sumter Area. I am a DoD civilian working on Shaw AFB making about $34,000 a yr. I am currently renting ($750) but I am thinking of buying. My credit score is about 680 and quailfy for a VA loan. What are my chances of getting a home loan with little or no money down? I am looking at home in the $160,000-$170,000 range. Is that possible?

The first thing you need to do is to meet with a lender to discuss you options. Go to a direct lender (a bank), not a mortgsge broker. Get pre approved for financing. You can purchase a home with no downpayment utilizing a VA loan. I believe that the odds of you being able to purchase a home are good. Once pre approved for financing find an accredited buyer's representative realtor, one with an ABR designation, to work with you.

You need to contact a mortgage professional who knows about VA loans. This is the only way for you to know for sure what you would be able to afford and then you could move forward with making a purchase. Please let me know if you need further info or would like for me to arrange for my network of people in that area to get in touch with you.
