Window Treatments - which really adds value?

How much of a difference does window treatments make for improving the home value? We are considering cellular shades for our home. In particular we are getting custom shades that will cover multiple side by side windows instead of individual shades. It's going to cost us more for that. We've also made the decision for cellular over faux wood blinds. Do you think we are spending our money wisely. The property is currently appraising in the low $300s.

The most important thing is to choose neutral colors and to be sure to have a custom look. Having a professional measure and install is a good idea. Faux wood blinds are very popular and very inexpensive and will probably be just as appealing on resale.

The best answer is:
What are other homes, like yours, decorated like?

I would suggest asking a local Realtor about it. It all the homes like yours have plantation shutters, then you may have a problem. When do you plan to sell? If this improvement is to make your home more enjoyable, then factor that in.

If you have limited funds and want to make some improvements in order to prepare your home for sale, than having a Realtor evaluate your home and offer some perspective might not be a bad idea. I helped a client once who spent $6,000 upgrading a bathroom, and had not money for paint and carpet, which she really needed.
