Is it a good idea to replace the Whirlpool with a claw foot tub? (house in 350, 000 range in SW Durham)
I would say no to replacing the jet tub with a claw foot tub. I can't think of a single buyer who didn't find a jet tub as a plus. Claw foot tub is taste specific and may not appeal to all buyers and contemporary home design is very popular right now. A separate shower and tub is also a frequently requested feature in master baths in this price range.
I assume you have other bathrooms with tubs. Do you use your tub? If not, consider replacing it with a large 2 person tiled shower with 2 shower heads. We took out our whirlpool tub that we used 20 times in 10 years, put in a larger shower, added closets, and my favorite--a bidet. I love the extra storage for towels, sheets and toiletries. If you put in a larger shower, consider a roll-in shower that is handi-capped accessible. Don't forget a grab bar even if you don't make it accessible. Grab bars prevent falls.
If you like this idea and want to talk, please feel free to call me.

It depends on the type of home, style of the property and size of the tub. I personally would prefer a deeper soaking tub to a jetted tub any day, Most jetted tubs are too shallow!
Claw foot tubs are making something of a come back, and can be found a bit more often at higher price points. However, they do appeal to a more limited clientele. You may be better off getting creative on a tile surround, and including some nice pattern work, perhaps some medallions or listello details, in a great neutral with some tone to it. As a builder, we recieve more requests for whirlpool tubs than free standing or claw foot tubs.
