Should structural support beams in a basement be painted? If so, what type of paint is best?

It is my understanding that wood should be painted for protection. Does this hold true for building supports that are wood? A house I may buy has old, unpainted wooden supports and I am wondering if i should paint them.

Best to ask an engineer. I would say that INTERIOR support beams in a basement say - do not have to be painted to protect the wood. It's outdoor elements that impact wood surfaces.
