Permit for storage shed

Asked by Kevin, San Jose, CA Tue Nov 9, 2010

Some websites say

A one story detached accessory structure to be used for a tool or storage shed, playhouse or similar use with a floor area of 120 square feet or less and a maximum height of 15 feet does not required a building permit.

City of San Jose reguires permit for storage shed and deck.

Does permit required to build a storage shed in unincorporated areas like Burbank and Fruitdale?

Every city is different so check with the Building Department. Also inquire about set backs from property lines and buildings.

I agree. Every city is different and has different rules and regulations. I would definitely check and see what these are. Were you able to figure it out for San Jose? I am going to be moving there soon and want to know what you found out.

Always good to be sure - my suggestion is to go on down to the town hall and ask your question directly so you get the right answer.

Burbank is not unincorporated; it's a separate city, and yes, you would need a permit.

I didn't need one in Los Gatos (unincorporated) for under 200 sq. ft.
