Is an in ground vinyl pool a mistake on the west coast?

We are looking to put in an in ground vinyl pool in our yard. We know these are not traditionally done on the west coast- but they are really popular on the east coast and really cost efficient. The new technology means they look exactly the same as a traditional plaster pool- great decking etc- the benefit is the cost is 1/3. We are looking for a smaller splash pool because our yard is super small-- so no matter the construction... it has to be tiny. Is this a huge mistake? The end result will be pool that is 12 x 24 (we have a small yard) with the deep end around 6.5 feet maybe a tad deeper. We know this isn't an investment into the property--- but we think it is an investment into the family-- is it a mistake? (please look it up before you comment if you are not familiar with the modern/current look of an inground vinyl pool. Thanks!

When making any improvement to your home, one must understand, their personal enjoyment will be the greatest return on investment.

If you intend to stay there for a while, enjoy your pool and don't give this another thought.

I don't know about vinyl pools but I just love the vinyl decks you can get in Red Deer. They are beautiful and economical all at the same time. http://www.rtweatherproofing.com

It would be for your enjoyment, but would more than likely not add to the resale value of the home.

I would agree that it isn't a mistake. I don't think it would have the resale value of a traditional one, but a pool is a pool--in Southern California nonetheless. The value that your family will get alone would be a perk. And another perk most people might not consider: better earthquake proofing!

You probably will not get your money back when you sell. It's a good idea for you to do for yourself but not for resale value.

Assuming the craftmanship and installation is done correctly, then no, it is not a mistake. I have two personal friends who have the type of pool you describe. One bought a house with the pool already in the yard; and the other had thiers installed. Both love their repsective pools, and have not had any issues with them at all. Good luck, and enjoy!

Thanks so much for your reply. We are not trying to increase the value... just get a swimming hole for our kids that is heated and salt water- both easy to do with the in ground vinyls.
