My wife and I are considering purchasing a 1978 colonial in Bedford, NY. Our intention would be to add approximately 2,000 sf to the first and second floors and to finish the 750 sf basement.
We would fully gut and expand the kitchen and install premium appliances and add a butler's pantry (finished total: 400-450 sf), add a 400 sf family room with many large windows, add a 250 sf 3 season room, possibly reconfigure and add to the rest of the main floor for a more open plan feel. On the second floor we would add a 500 sf bonus room and would double the size of the master bedroom from 250 to 500 sf (including walk in closets) and we'd add a large premium master bath. We would add a 3rd garage, finish the 750 sf basement, add a large deck and change the facade to enhance curb appeal. We have not been able to find a piece of land as desirable as this with a newbuild and are therefore considering this option.
Approx. how much would this cost (total or $/sf)?
Your best bet is to request quotes from a few recommended contractors. I would be happy to provide you with a few who have done a lot of work in the area. You want someone who is good at what they do but also has worked in the town before and knows how to get things processed through the building department. Please contact me if you'd like some names.
Hi Elrey -
I have a web site that has a section in it named construction costs. I think this might prove to be a helpful tool in answering your question. Please go to http://www.staceerealestate.com and click on construction costs. At the bottom of that page you will find the name and site for a terrific architect who can further help in assisting you. Good luck!
