How can I upgrade my basic 2 story home built in 2002?

I am hoping to sell the house in about 3 years. When I watch the home shows on TV, the upgrades they show are not only waaaaay out of my budget, but would also be too much for my area. I have formica countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, vinyl flooring in kitchen, dining, hall and baths. Carpet in living room, family room, stairs upstairs hallway and bedrooms. My kitchen and bathroom cabinets are a medium oak with an inset panel in the center. My doors and woodwork are all a lighter wood color (a little lighter than the cabinets) and made of pressed wood (ick, couldn't afford the upgrade to real wood). I want to start planning and making upgrades to increase the value, but I need to be very budget conscous. I am great at looking for and finding bargains! I just need some ideas.

Thanks!

I agree with the last comment, paint does wonders for a home. Second some little things that can be done are changing out hardware on cabinets, sinks, etc if they look dated. Switch out light fixtures if they look dated. Paint base boards and people really love granite countertops but this could get expenseive.

First of all a good nuetral paint job will do wonders. Then if you are handy tackle the floors. Tile flooring is in and I haven't found anyone who dislikes them. They create feeling of luxury in a home. Then instead of formica install Corian or similar countertops in kitchen and bath. Granite is popular but may be a little too steep for the price range of the house. If you do not like the floor boards, then others will also not like them so why don't you try to paint them white which is very popular currently. I hope that gives you some idea. Good luck!
