I would first look into some referrals. Friends and family can likely provide you with someone who will provide quality services. It is very important that you find a handyman that has the proper certifications. You want the job to be performed properly, ensuring you don't need more repairs in the near future.

A lot of real estate agents use Jeeves Handyman Services, 703-465-0100. They work all over Northern Virginia. They charge a pretty standard rate for licensed and insured handymen in this area of $55/hour, and I think being licensed and insured is something worth serious consideration in this lawsuit-happy area. They have a good reputation for showing up on time and doing the job right.

Macman, most handyman work the whole Northern Virginia market. Here's a list of referrals I received from RE/MAX colleagues before I opened my own company:

1. Jose Avila and his phone number is 571-237-4349 à from Gayle Yates
2. Rick Steeby 703-901-2792 à from Jo Ann Kennel
3. Arnie 712920608 (HandyMan and electrician) à from Zen Carague
4. James Manning 703-867-7540 à from Ellen McRae
5. John & Palmy Plaza 703 932-7515 à from Teresa Hollingsworth
6. Douglas Bonilla 703-408-4017 à from Davison

Hope it helps. Usually referrals by realtors are pretty solid as they want to preserve their reputations for good advice and have had multiple previous clients use their handyman referral.
