Hi Randy,
Great to see you are considering some improvements...
Design/Build is certainly one way to go. However, you should also consider hiring an architect and contractor separately. Why? Because throughout the project, you would benefit from having the architect as your representative who would look out for your interests; especially important when negotiating a construction contract and during construction. Having the designer and builder the same entity has the a potential (italics!) for a conflict of interests. There are many levels of relationships between Architect and Builder that are between D/B and traditional Design/Bid/Build that are common and may best suit your needs.
I'm a Newton resident and architect who has worked on many projects in our great city... Let me know if I can be of assistance.
Good Luck,
Ed Chang
I can recommend Jeff Stone. I have seen his work and have used him for some small projects. He is excellent. (781) 820-8482 jeffstone@jlstoneinc.com.
His summary: About Jeff Stone
Jeff has been a carpenter and builder for the past 24 years. Before starting his own company he worked in almost all phases of carpentry and building, including cabinet making, architectural millwork, and post & beam framing. These skills, along with a bachelors degree in business, have provided the foundation in which to deliver the quality services his customers have come to expect over the past 14 years. "I love designing, building and seeing my work come into being". It is this kind of personal commitment and skill that Jeff brings to his customers in the building and remodeling business.
Hi Randy-
My friend Karen let me know that she recommended me to you. I have done several projects in Newton and I am familiar with their zoning regulations. My expertise is additions & renovations to existing homes. My goal is to fulfill the wishes of the homeowner with sensitive changes that enhance the existing architecture while improving the interior space and relationship to the site. I do new homes and smaller projects as well. I have also worked in residential real estate, which I believe gives me additional insight into renovation value. You can see some examples of my work and my resume at http://www.finespaces.com. I can be reached at 508-653-5223.
Best Regards,
Kecia Gifford

Hi Randy,
Yes- I would recommend : Architect- Alan Mayer- 617 566-7222. He lives in Newton and is amazing & creative.
For the contractor, I would recommend Patrick McDonough- 617-818-7876- he is extremely detail oriented and his pricing is right.
You can tell them both I sent you. If you have any questions about what remodeling will add the most value to your house, please give me a call.
Sincerely,
