You should check the NYC Buildings Department web site, and with an architect. Also be aware that decks or porches require a permit from the Buildings Department, there must be at least three feet between the deck or porch and the property line on the sides, a deck or porch may project up to eight feet beyond the building into the required rear yard under zoning, all decks and porches must have a railing at least 42 inches high, spaces between railings and posts can be no greater than 5 inches, elevated decks and porches must be braced at the columns and where the beams and columns connect, decks must be properly anchored to a house or building, these are just some of the many rules, so check with the proper professionals.

I'm going to be installing a deck myself. I thanks for posting this answer. I will definitely have to look into the different regulations. I want to make sure I do everything correctly the first time.

This depends on your area of expertise, We suggest many ways, but the best advice is to get an Architect, talk with that Architect about all legalities, Permits and Structures, After that then call up to about 4-5 Contractors who Specialize in Deck Building

Good Luck in your deck Building project

Every deck is different, whether it be the design or the materials used, and you want to find the ones that will work best for you.…
