I know this isn't funny but 98 miles north is a great place to live.. Prescott AZ. might be just a bit too far for you.
I like CrimeReports.com seems to give me a good feel for an area.
good luck to you.

Thanks to you and all of the people who are answering my question. The reason for our planned move to Arizona is my health. I have lung problems and 5 different types of arthritis (the worst being psoriatic arthritis.). I've been all over the State on two different 3 week vacations. I love the mountains, but I seem to experience less pain in the low desert. However, I know very little about the safety of various areas. I appreciate all answers.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

No Realtor will give you that answer. They will tell you to do your due diligence when looking for a home to buy or rent. Simple reason is defining the word "safe" in the eyes of one is different in another. A Realtor cannot by law direct you to a specific area to live, that is your decision.
