What are the best schools/neighborhoods between Ft. Worth & Decatur, TX (northwest)?

Asked by Belle, Miami, FL Fri May 11, 2007

I'm considering moving to the Fort Worth area with my middle school-aged son and I want to live between Fort Worth (where I'll likely work) and Decatur where my sister lives. She isn't too familiar with the area as she's only been there a year and doesn't go far from home.

I am a REALTOR in Tarrant County. I grew up in Decatur and i sell all of Tarrant, Wise, etc.
All of the schools in N. Tarrant County are great! The best athletics are in Southlake/Carroll, Grapevine/Colleyville, Keller, and Northwest ISD. They are also academically fantastic, only varying by degrees. Decatur is also great. It is a slower pace with the students being of more varied backgrounds. I suggest that you visit all of the areas and then you can decide which suits you and your family the best.

Belle, you might also want to consider the Haslet area. This would put you in the Northwest ISD, another good school district and in terms of location, would put you in between Fort Worth and Decatur. The Haslet area is gowing, but also has a lower tax rate than many of the surrounding areas.

In Tarrant County, I would first recommend Southlake, then Keller, and Colleyville. All have outstanding schools and wonderful neighborhoods. Have you ever heard of Carroll Football? Southlake is a legend when it comes to their high school football team. I can’t say enough about this area; it’s a great place to raise a family and is ideally located in close proximity to Ft. Worth, Dallas, and DFW airport.

Belle: I would suggest in the community served by the best high school, which can be checked at a number of sites--or by calling a reputable Realtor in the area. You may also want to check it out on Neighboroo via the link below:

I agree with DiAnne. Especially with the part about Northwest and Decatur ISD. I am a little more partial to Decatur because I live in Wise County(Paradise) and work in Decatur. Academically, you just can't go wrong with either of those two school districts AND if your child is in to sports, BOTH are outstanding those areas as well. Wise County is a little slower pace but still close enough to the "BIG" city that you can still get there easily.

Visiting an area is always the best if you are close enough to do that. Pictures aren't always worth a thousand words when checking a home out ONLY through the MLS sheet. Drive the neighborhood and see for yourself. If I can help you in any way, PLEASE email me with your criteria. I too sell all of Wise, Parker and Tarrant Counties.

Interesting question. It all depends on your definition of the best. Of course it may also depend on the price range you desire to purchase. As mentioned above many consider Southlake, Colleyville, and Keller to be great school districts. Northwest is probably much less in the spotlight, but in my opinion is also an excellent option. It might also depend if you want to live in the big city or a smaller community. If you need information about test scores, parent reviews, rankings, etc and know the specific school name, you can check it under the schools listing on my website.
