Spiritual and Cultural life in Marin or East Bay?

Asked by Susan, San Francisco, CA Thu Oct 4, 2007

My husband and I are going to have a child and are considering moving to Marin or East Bay from San Francisco. Although we come from different spiritual and cultural backgrounds, and arent particularly religious, we have decided to raise our child culturally jewish. Does anyone know how strong of a jewish community there is in the east bay or marin?

Hello Susan:

Marin is a very liberal place and we encourage all kinds of cultural and religious upbringings.

I am not really familiar with the Jewish community here but I do know that there is a large Jewish community in Marin.

Both of my sons have many Jewish friends. My younger son's elementary and middle school best friend in his GATE (Gifted and Talented) program is Jewish, and we have become very good friend with his parents. The family go to the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center for service, fellowship and activities. Actually, we were there the first time for his friend's Bar Mitzvah two years ago. JCC is quite renowned here.

If you'd like, I can ask her to call you or have you call her so you can find out more about the Jewish community here in Marin.

Here is the link to JCC. http://www.marinjcc.org/index.html

In addition to spiritual and cultural life in Marin, it's beautiful and it's safe. Very family-oriented. I know of no better place to live.

Here are some words from The JCC in San Rafael:
Congregation Rodef Sholom is a Reform congregation committed to uplifting prayer and spiritual growth (Tefilah), lifelong learning (Torah), and repairing our world through acts of lovingkindness (Gemilut Chassidim). Congregation Rodef Sholom's Relgious School is a warm and caring environment in which we teach and model skills and behaviors that enable full participation in the Jewish home, the synagogue and Jewish community life. Towards this end, we offer educational programs for children ages three through high school.

Yes, to both spritual and cultural life in Marin County. There is a wonderful Jewish Community Center out in San Rafael on San Pedro Road ( by the San Rafael Civic Center) as well as a strong Jewish community in general throughout Marin County. A close friend of mine's son had his bar mitzvah there. I was so impressed with the Rabbi in how well he had tought these kids, the importance of helping out others! . Also, the Community Center puts on a lecture series with alot of well known people like Al Gore. I have bought the lecture series in the past and it was so worth it. Also, if you like to swim, they have the best pool in Marin County! When deciding where to move, i would visit the community center, I am sure they would be a wealth of information for you.

Hi Susan:

I just received a flyer on the 'Kanbar Center for the Performing Arts - song, spirit and soul' in the mail, so I looked it up online for you:

Marin has outstanding public (and private) schools which offer excellent programs for kids; from performing arts, both school run, private, and county run, academic related extra-curriculum programs, sports, or just fun classes through parks and recreation; this is just a wonderful place to bring up a family.

Here is a link to the East Bay Jewish Community Center located in Berkeley and Oakland. http://www.opjcs.org

My client sends her son to the preschool on Walnut St. in Berkeley and feels that it is a very tight knit community. Most of all the families live close by and are able to walk to the preschool.
