Should shredders become standard amenities in condo developments?

I'm interested in opinions. It seems there have been basic advances in amenities such as internet access etc. But do you think it makes sense for condo developments to provide shredding kiosks as an amenity for residents to be able to shred junk mail etc. centrally instead of each unit purchasing their own shredders? The assumption would be it's free for residents to use and shreds even more securely and faster than a home shredder would. When I think about paying bay area prices for a condo this is an amenity I'd love to see in addition to the "luxury" services. (This is on my mind as my shredder broke and I'm sitting here with a bag of stuff and nowhere to shred it till I buy another!)

The only problem would be the things thrown in that should not be shreadded, whether kids or adult not paying attention, the liability would be huge for the condo association which would have to pass it back to the owners in higher condo fees. In principal it is a great idea, but not practical in cost

If they did, it would need to be heavy duty so it wouldn't break or jam. My first shredder jammed up and broke like yours in the first couple of months. Can you imagine what the maintenance on a product like that would be? Fellowes says they have a "jam proof" shredder that I will probably try out next. Maybe that would be a good solution.

A water kiosk would be better money spent...they cost around $3k, and then everyone could get their bottled water.

Shredders are problematic.

In large offices, shredders get stuck, overfilled, and overworked. People forget to empty a full bin and more attempts to shred back it up, or cause stalling. Because I have seen this in an office, I would be concerned about who would take care of the shredder at a complex.

I once lived in a complex that had a concierge on staff that could handle everything from typing to dry cleaning. I bet that complex has a shredder, only becasue there is someone to maintain it. BTW, it was in CA.

An interesting concept but why? Do condo's have a greater incidence of identitiy theft cases? There has to be a better reason than just yours broke and believe me you'd be paying for it in the HOA fees. There is nothing free anywhere.

Hi SFNative. I think that's a fantastic idea. My only concern would be the maintenance and security to make sure kids can't get hurt. A commercial shredder could be dangerous to children and hurt them badly which poses a liability issue for the HOA. I think the idea is a great one especially in this day and age when we are flooded with junk mail and exposed to identity fraud.
