What I would suggest is that you spend a day with an agent and drive around the different neighborhoods in San Francisco that might be of interest to you and have the agent explain the pros and cons and the price of each neighborhood. By doing this you will get a first hands feel of the wonderful San Francisco neighborhoods have to offer. You can read on line or on brochures about each neighborhood but until you actually drive or walk through them you really canâ€™t get a good feel for the area.

Well I moved from England in 2002 to CA, its a little further but moving any major distance is exciting and scary. Firstly my advice would be to read up on some of the nieghborhoods, evaluate where you work and how mouch commuting time and your biggest change, reducing the size of your living space. I used to live in a 4000+ sqft home with views of hills, but in reality I now live in a much smaller home- but I live in an amazing city and in my opinion one of the best hoods of the city.

SF is a wonderful place to live and it is certainly different than West Palm Beach.

Your terms desirable and affordable are relative here and other requirements may have to be greatly adjusted to accomodate those two terms - such as the suburb you choose versus the City - the distance to the City - even the neighborhood in the City, the size, etc.

Very different environment, but San Francisco is a fun city with lots to do nearby. My advice about where to look would be dependent upon your budget and lifestyle parameters. With that said, you should also consider SSF and San Bruno, both located about 15 minutes South of S.F. You can get more bang for your buck and I think the schools are better.
