thinking of moving and would love to walk. Is this possible in the downtown area?
I strongly disagree with "Rob". Eureka has much less crime than Arcata & McKinleyville. There are a few really beautiful neighborhoods in Eureka, one being Lundbar Hills by the Eureka Golf Course. It is a very safe, family friendly neighborhood where everyone takes pride in their homes. There is pretty much "zero" crime up there as there is only one road in/out of the area. There are homeless people in Eureka, where aren't they, but they are usually in the downtown area which isn't near the Eureka Golf Course. Lundbar Hills is surrounded with trees, very private and away from the main road but close to shopping. I am envious of anyone who lives up there, it seems to be such a friendly neighborhood. I have a friend who lives up there and whenever I drive to her house people always wave to me.

The best place to live in Eureka where there is virtually NO crime, is a great place to live and walk, one block to the Golf Course, close to transportation and just on the outskirts of the city is the best kept secret of Lundbar Hills. I live there. It is the most awesome place I've ever lived. The neighbors frequently walk the neighborhoods and are very friendly. Most doctors, lawyers, city politicians and other professionals live in that neighborhood. Check it out on zillow.com. My house is listed there as a make me move.
There is only one street in and out. The police are there in a heartbeat because of the high profile neighbors. it is upper middle to upper income area. Home prices start in the mid $300K.
As far as Arcata, it is worse than Eureka. The people there are proud of their homeless transients and actually encourage them to sleep in their back yards and don't mind that they defecate on the streets. It's a college town. It is everything you might expect it to be plus an army of young transient drugged out people who live in the woods because they don't want to work.
Hello John:
Yes, there are many beautiful places to walk. along the coast, beaches, national and state parks, Eureka's Sequoia Zoo, Rivers all very close and near. The wild habitate reserve, Manilla Dunes and more. Downtown Eureka has a very attractive boardwalk along the bay and victorian buildings of retail for shopping and dining.
My listing in myrtletown is in a very nice area of Eureka. A quiet community, and many walking neighbors enjoying the peaceful environment of this small town neighborhood community. The police department for any of the communities of my sellers beautiful properties will inform you of statistics. We have a smaller population here compared to larger suburban areas of other parts of California. Each town has a culture to unique to its own. Each town has something special to offer. All are very near each other. Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods are beautiful learning environments. Eureka is a scummy town with homeless wandering the streets. Do not get me wrong, there are nice neighborhoods, but in general go North to Arcata, Mckinleyville or South to Fortuna. We just moved from Mckinleyville and loved it there.
Eureka is a coastal town. There really isn't a river in Eureka. The city is situated around the Bay. Eureka is basically a small city, that does have all the elements such as crime that large cities have, but just on a smaller scale. Just as in a large city, there are some neighborhood sand areas that have higher crime rates and others that have less. Eureka is a wonderfule city and has something for everyone. My suggestion to clients who are new to the area is to really take time to research the area, talk to the locals and even check in with the local sherrif or police departments to get neighborhood crime statistics. With the right guidance you'll be able to find a wonderful, safe place to live.
There is no River running through Eureka. There is a bay and some sloughs. Elk River runs south of Eureka. Some areas of Eureka have crime or crime activity but on the whole much of Eureka is very safe. The downtown area of Eureka is very walkable. Additionally, there are many areas in forests and on beacheds that make for excellent walking.
