Just like anywhere else, it is what you make of it. I live in Magnolia with my husband and son and we love all the wide open spaces, trees, and country living. And yet, we are close enough to enjoy what a large city has to offer...sports, museums, the zoo, etc. There is a great book by Megan F. Salch called 100+ Activities for Houston Kids that you should check out. It's a great resource. I've linked the Amazon listing for the book for you.

Check out my house if you are interested in a great house for the money in a Houston suburb. We absolutely love the house but our family has outgrown it. My husband and I built it in 2002 and have taken immaculate care of it. We live in Katy (west side suburb of Houston) and love the area. The house is loaded with upgrades and we have made many improvements on it since we moved in. We win yard of the month on an annual basis and the inside is even nicer than the outside. Here is the web site to check it out. We welcome FHA and conventional loans and we are providing a one year home warranty for your protection. http://search.har.com/engine/dispSearch.cfm?mlnum=9669577&ba… Address: 4847 Monarch Glen Lane, Katy, TX

Every city will have good spots and bad spots. A good way to decide is to go tohttp:// www.schooldigger.com and see how the public schools in those zip codes look like.

I have lived in the Houston Metro area since the mid 1970's, raised 4 children here. What a great community. Check out this link for local Houston information. http://www.texasproudrealty.com/links_main.shtml

Hi Halley,

I had never had an attraction to Houston and thought I would never live here. Having been here for several years, now, I can tell you that out of eight different U.S. locations that I have lived, this is my favorite. I have three children, we live in Kingwood (northeast Houston) and we love it! VERY family oriented :)

Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions, and sorry to reply so late.

Houston is probably the greatest big city to raise a family. Often times, Houston is referred to as an overgrown small town because of the friendliness of its people. We have several excellent school districts, numerous golf courses, outstanding artistic venues etc. You should definitely include Houston on your list.

Houston is a great place to raise children. We have over 70 master planned communities that have full amenity packages including playgrounds parks, areas for sports, walking paths, biking paths and good schools. We have hundreds of golf courses. Clear Lake has the 3rd largest private boat fleet in the country, If boating is your thing. If your kids want to run, we have acreage lots available for those who require elbow room. If you like winter sports, we have 2 airports.

Houston is great for families. There are many activities such as the Houston Zoo, waterparks, sports activities, the Texans, Astros, Rockets and Dynamos. The beach is just over an hour away.

Many parts of Houston are very family friendly and very child friendly, but not every neighborhood.
