Jackson Heights is an up and coming area. In the early 1990's crime wave, as most immigrant communities suffered from the effect of petty crime etc... Statistically speaking, I truly believe that most immigrants legal or not that reside in the neighborhood are too busy making a living that crime will not be in the mind of the majority. Walking around the neighborhood, check the main train line and you will see a mix of people from all corners of the world. Unless you walk in what is visible wealth, you will not be likely to be a target of crime than other people living in there.
Crime, grizzly or petty can occur in the most expensive or safe neighborhoods in the city.
Nevertheless, if I were a single woman, I would not walk alone late at night if I did not have to. This is just common sense that can be applied anywhere in NYC.
