How safe /annoying to live near rail tracks in North Central Austin?

Found a house in Crestview and behind the fenced in yard is the rail tracks where the future light rail will run past. How often do the freight trains run past how loud and does it vibrate the house at all hours. Should I run the other way?

I lived two houses away from the Crestview tracks (across Woodrow plus one house) for 4 years and worked from home at the time. I found the train not cumbersome and running a couple times a day. However, other posts below are correct ... that will be light rail and they have been running some test light rail trains through there. I would check the neighborhood associaton at http://www.crestviewna.org/ includling the neighborhood yahoo group ... you could join the yahoo group and ask rail questions.

Remember, resale could be tough but it is a hot and trendy neighborhood.

That is the light rail. You are going towant to check into the metro station infor or run times. With all the hype about the metro lately and the price of gas going up, you may want to pay a little extra for that. :-)

I agree with Ki's suggestion. Check with the city for daily runtimes. Once you have those, I suggest going to the house at various times of the day/night to experience it for yourself - of course you most likely will not be able to get into the house to do this, but you can park and walk around on the street.

You may also consider speaking to some of the neighbors and asking them some questions about the noise level, frequency, etc.

Keep in mind that in a situation such as this one that a discount for this factor should be built into the price of the home, when compared with others in the neighborhood. That's good for you when buying, but it will also impact you when selling in the future.

FIRST ANSWER
I would call the city and ask. I have heard that more trains will run but they will cause less noise. But I would call the city and get it straight from the source.
