How do I find a house in a comparable neighborhood as my own?

Asked by Sarah, San Jose, CA Fri Jun 22, 2007

I am looking to move at some point to another state but want to live in an area that is economically, socially and physically like the neighborhood I am currently living in.

I suggest you go online and search for relocation help. There are sites that let you compare communities. One of them is http://www.bestplaces.net I hope this helps.

Find a Realtor and have them sit down with you to find out exactly what you are looking at.

First, write a list of attributes that describe your area (e.g. college town, middle class families, ranch style homes, walking distance to shops, schools with certain API scores, etc.). http://www.bestplaces.net is a good one to compare areas with. However, McCormack's Guides also give good comprehensive (yet general) info on areas as well. A knowledgeable agent can often easily identify areas that sound similar, based on the info you provided.

Hello Sarah,

My best advice for you is to find a qualified and experienced Realtor who works with Buyers in the city/state that you are contemplating. Preferrably, look for a Realtor who holds an ABR (Accredited Buyer's Representative) designation.

I've included a link below to assist you with your search.

Warm regards,
