How can I research an area's Crime Rate and the quality of that area's Schools?
I know it's a morbid question, but these two criteria would highly influence where I would decide to buy a home.

When considering buying a home in NYC you should not assume that your kids will automatically go to the closest school to your home. The school system has been drastically changed by Mayor Mike Bloomberg. The city of New York has a website http://www.nyc.gov. You can find police crime statistics and also school information. Below is a link to the department of education.

Hi Jorge,
The best way to check for crime in you rneighborhood is to check with the local police station. My clients who work on the Special Gang Task Forces use this for their home shopping. THey will have a record of all crimes and the street location. Good Luck, Mary Thu Aug 2 2007, 18:53

For crime rates there are online stats, but I think the better info and stats might come from your CRO...or Community Resource Officer at the police department. If you live in NYC I think you could call 311 and ask them to point you to the right person. Otherwise you could ask one of the beat officers in that district to point you in the right direction. That person can give you some ideas, trends, and if you're nice to them perhaps they'll email you the stats they have collected for the precinct. As for schools
You might also want to check the website http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.af3010c6672fa for stats on schools and crime and more information about the neighborhood. Also check out the link: http://nymag.com/realestate/articles/neighborhoods/gramercyp for some more information about the neighborhood. If you need a good agent to help you find just the right place, please send me your contact info and I'll put you in touch with a great agent.
