Nova,
If those are your choices that is quite a dilemma as both are conducive to raising a family and providing an enriching environment to do so. Havertown is EXTREMELY community oriented, they have major community events throughout the year, and very tight knit well into adulthood. Many folks were born there and may go away for higher education but typically choose to come back there to raise a family. It obviously feels less surburban than Lafayette Hill, but if that is a neighborhood setting that feels familiar to you and you want your children to have that "hometown USA" neighborhood experience then Havertown may be a better fit for you. It is close to the areas of the city of Philadelphia that typically offer more enrichment and if you prefer to have a host of prestigous private schools to choose from other than locally the available public school district than you will have plenty. My sister raised all of her children there and her husband is a native so I have experienced all it has to offer first hand. Although, I am from Montgomery country and am very familiar with Lafayette Hill, both places offer close proximity to key routesand public transportation, as well as all the necessary places to shop, from grocery to boutiques. Per statistics that are publicly available, crime rates are low and both public school systems are on par. Knowing where you and spouse work/need to be near would be insightful to helping you better or if anyone in your family unit had special needs they may be better served being closer to certain healthcare systems/special needs programs ( I had a background in corporate healthcare before real estate). Although Delaware county is smaller and typically has higher taxes, Montgomery County is larger, it's known as the richest county in PA for a reason and taxes in that area esepcially aren't all necessarily lower than Havertown. It really depends on what price range/features you are looking in/at as well. I realize you don't have much time, however, if you like I can certainly help you close that gap and share with you some research I keep on hand for relocates.
Happy hunting,
Josie
