The provided websites will give you guidance regarding crime and school scores. As for commute where are you commuting to and at what time of day each way. The commute from South to North via 85, 87, 280 and 101 is very popular in the morning. Right now that the schools are out, including the colleges the commute is less. Depending on where you hope on and blend you may hit metering lights. If you are a commuter you will have the benefit of a passenger to get into the commuter lanes.
As for schools, most people seem to focus on the school scores. I like to open your mind to focus on the needs of your children. Each school has a focus, your needs may be very different than the next family. Are your children into the Arts? Science? Math? Sports? Any special needs? What ages are they? Do you need day care on sight or close by?
The advice to drive around the neighborhood is very sound. The best time is during your typical commute and when children and are going to and leaving school, plus nights and weekends. A quiet neighborhood can turn into a sport's or commuter parking lot.
All the best to you.

One gets excellent rents, commute is great as on can hop on to 85 and or 101.
Typical rents for a 2 bed or 3 beds range from $1350 to $1750 depending on square footage
And number of baths.
There are many fine Private schools close by.
You can go to many fine Crime report sites for stats.
It would be a great place to buy a rental.
We had two fine condos in The Colony Green complex and Cherry Crest complex
Let us know if you would be interested in those complexes.
I can suggest you check Out Campbell and Cambrian, zip 95124.

I work right near there and what Terri said is true. You really should check out the crime in the area first. You do have quick access to hwy 85/87, but the schools in the area are not the best. Let me put it this way if you are renting the rent is pretty low then you can safely sumise that it is NOT the most desired area. The higher the rent or home price the more desired the area.
I would make sure I did my research first before I made any moves.
At your service,
The references below are good sources for the official answers to your questions. Relative to "commute time" with Hwy 85 and Hwy 87 so close you would have the best possible commute times.
Regarding the neighborhood: you might drive over to Giuffrida Ave. in the early evening and on a weekend to get your own sense of how that area could work for you.
Giuffrida Ave is a great location if you love shopping.
For help understanding commutes, try google maps. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
Google has a traffic feature which may help you estimate the amount of time it will take to get to and from a location while factoring in the traffic patterns.
