Anyone know what the N Alvord St neighbourhood is like?

FIRST ANSWER
Have you checked out Google maps? Go here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&… then go to "street view" you will be able to pan around the streets pretty well to see the condition of the houses. You can also call down to the local police dept to get crime rates and other info. I hope that helped you out.
