Advice on moving to Somerset

S. Wilson
Home Buyer
Atlanta, GA

Hello,
We currently live in Georgia and we are looking to get back to the North East. The educational system in Georgia is not up to par for our standards. Can someone tell me about what areas in Somerset are good for young professionals with kids? Especially interested in schools districts, activities for kids and most important we want to live in a culturally diverse neighborhood.

Sincerely,
Mr. Wilson

Hi there - You've gotten some good advice so far - Somerset County is a beautiful county with many terrific communities of different sizes and attributes. Much will depend on your budget and the style of home you are interested in.

One community mentioned has been Basking Ridge - great community with super schools, access to highways and public transportatin (train and bus) to NYC, shopping, recreational programs - school and township....loads to offer. Basking Ridge does offer a variety of home styles, including single family across a broad price range, duplexes, townhomes and condos. The tax rate is quite good.
The link below gives you a sampling of homes across the pricing spectrum to give you a sense of the variety of options:

Also, I'm sending along a link from my website for township and school info:

There are many terrific communities within Somerset County - we've touched on Basking Ridge, but there is also Warren, Watchung, Bridgewater, Green Brook, Bedminster, Bernardsville, Branchburg, Hillsborough - and on and on. I'd like very much to explore these communities and your options in further detail with you. There is also a community called Franklin Township and portions of it are called "Somerset" - if that happens to be the community you are referring to - we'll include it among those we explore.

Please also know that I am an accredited Relocation Specialist and so I understand and regularly work with clients who are working through the challenges - and opportunities - of a major move. Helping relocating families become acquainted with communities, explore specific options and work through the process is something I am good at, and have experience in.

S. Wilson,
Tough to follow up on such outstanding answers from my colleagues. One thing to be prepared for is the pricing on homes . Somerset County is one of the wealthiest counties in the country so the house prices may give you sticker shock. The fortunate thing is you get what you pay for- an outstanding area to live and raise your family. Let me know if I can assist you in your relocation.. I have over 20 years of experience in the area so I can help you navigate through this challenging market. You can reach me at 908-500-0116 or at c21newbeg@aol.com.

Good morning Mr. Wilson,
I have lived in basking Ridge (Bernards Township) for over a decade, having moved here from an adjacent county for a number of reasons but particularly because of the fantastic school system, tranquility and overall high quality of life.
The school system here affords every student the opportunity, encouragement and support to succeed both academically and in sports, as attested by the wide array of quality universities attended by graduates from Ridge.
The town itself offers a multitude of recreational opportunities for children and adults. There are major organized programs for soccer, baseball, football, horseback riding and lacrosse, 3 golf courses and numerous parks along with jogging and cycling trails.
Basking Ridge retains its old time village charm while providing excellent access to major highways and New York City via train or express bus service.
There is more, of course!
Looking forward to hearing from you so that I can assist you further - (908) 295-5129

Greetings Mr. Wilson,
It may sound strange, but Joan's response regarding any discussion of neighborhoods is correct. As REALTORS we must be careful to adhere to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Fair Housing Laws. Here are a few links which may help you to decide which communities may be right for you.

Hello Mr. Wilson,

Welcome back to the North East!! I live and work in Somerset County and I have four children in the Bernards Township school system. The schools are terrific, the community is supportive, the rec department offers so many terrific programs for kids of all ages from T-Ball for 5 year olds all the way up to road trips for active adults! I would consider Bernards Township. Montgomery is another Somerset town with great schools though it is much further south, not as easy a commute to NYC and access to the major highways is somewhat compromised. I would love an opportunity to talk with you. Please visit my Basking Ridge Website (link below); and contact me if you think I can help.

There are many towns in Somerset County that have very good school systems. I work and live in Somerset County so I can definitely help you with your search. As the agent mentioned above, Somerset is a huge county so it would help to know the town you will be working in so your agent can recommend areas that meet your needs.

FIRST ANSWER

Mr. Wilson,

I have to start by first telling you the although I am familiar with Somerset County I cannot claim to be an expert in this area, since I work mostly in Morris County.
What I can tell you is that Somerset County is a large area and encompasses towns that are close to Princeton(Rocky Hill Boro.), have convenient transportation to NYC(Peapack-Gladstone), are rural(Far Hills), more urban(North Plainfield) , middle-class to upscale and everything in between.
As a Realtor, I cannot get into culturally diverse or even discuss family oriented. It has to do with steering people toward one neighborhood or another based on ethnicity or family size which is illegal.
I hope this helps at least a little.
Good luck with your future move!
