It is unusual that an older dwelling is built with defective (Chinese) drywall. I'm surprised, living in Port Charlotte that you have not heard about Chinese drywall
Gulf Coast Realty
This type of "defective" drywall was shipped in from places in China as well as several plants within the USA. It is manufactured with substances that become toxic especially when the home is not a/c'd for long periods. It not only corrodes copper wiring and coils, which makes your appliances breakdown it can effect breathing and cause electrical issues.
This is something you should stay away from unless you are looking for a rehab project that cost between $18-$24 dollars a sq ft.

If the owner or agent has knowledge of defective or "chinese drywall" they are obligated to disclose this fact to you.
If you view the property you may smell the odor of rotten eggs, or if you look at the coils on the A/C unit you will see that they have become corroded. These are major signs of the drywall problems.
You can have your home inspector inspect various ares for the presence of the defective drywall.
For more information you can go to: http://www.chinesedrywall.com/ You will find a wealth of information on this subject.
I hope the home you like has no issues with the drywall.
