The condo in question here was built in 1974 so it is unlikely to have CDW. Chinese drywall was shipped to the USA after Hurricane Charley in late 2004 when there was a shortage of US made drywall. Unfortunately that coincided with the big building boom in SW Florida.

It is unusual that an older dwelling is built with defective (Chinese) drywall. I'm surprised, living in Port Charlotte that you have not heard about Chinese drywall

Jesse said it best - Buyer Beware and google chinese drywall so you can see 1st hand what chinese drywall is and does. Port Charlotte had its share of chinese drywall.

This type of "defective" drywall was shipped in from places in China as well as several plants within the USA. It is manufactured with substances that become toxic especially when the home is not a/c'd for long periods. It not only corrodes copper wiring and coils, which makes your appliances breakdown it can effect breathing and cause electrical issues.

This is something you should stay away from unless you are looking for a rehab project that cost between $18-$24 dollars a sq ft.

This fact should be disclosed but will surely be evident to a qualified building inspector.

Imported from China mostly during years of great activity 2005-2006 this product causes emission of toxic fumes and must be removed at great expense.

This property listing shows current status as "withdrawn". If there is a similar listing I can provide that information.

If the owner or agent has knowledge of defective or "chinese drywall" they are obligated to disclose this fact to you.

If you view the property you may smell the odor of rotten eggs, or if you look at the coils on the A/C unit you will see that they have become corroded. These are major signs of the drywall problems.

You can have your home inspector inspect various ares for the presence of the defective drywall.

For more information you can go to: You will find a wealth of information on this subject.

I hope the home you like has no issues with the drywall.

We call it "defective drywall" as it was manufactured in many different countries. A home with DD needs to be gutted and have all of the drywall replaced and then all the cainetry, flooring, etc, put back in place. It is not an inexpensive process. Homes built from generally 2003-2007 can contain it. A professional inspector can usually detect it.
