Hello Cameron,
The first answer you received is my opinion is the most accurate so far, Cynthia Fleming asks how you plan to use the home. Another agent suggests a different beach community and making the home a summer rental. All beaches along the coast have their own charm and beauty so you should find what 'speaks' to you the most to decide where to buy. If you want to make the home a summer rental you can get great weekly rents but there is more work involved in cleaning after the previous tenant and preparing the house for the next visitors (weekly). So you have to have a good team in place and not all agents handle vacation rentals. Any home can be a second home for you to use when you vacation and that home can also be a summer rental if you like so there are many options. Remember if the home is in a Home Owner Association controlled community then there may be rules regarding the rental aspect.

Good luck with you search,

I can go the the property and skype you so you can get first hand feel of the property or if you are coming out to visit I will make the arrangements to preview.

If you're able to purchase in this price range, I would like to suggest Newport Beach or Huntington Harbor in Huntington Beach, where you can have your own boat slip, if your renter doesn't have a boat, you can lease just the boat slip separately for more income!

In the summer you can make more income than just renting the home for 1yr at a time by doing a vacation rental & renting it out weekly & on weekends. This way you can come out & visit, enjoy the home for as long as you want & then rent it out. In the winter months you can rent it out for longer terms like 3mos, 6mos.

Shoot me an email directly if you'd like to talk to me some more. I don't look back on this same Trulia thread for answers posted after mine.

Of course, you can definitely make it into a vacation home. The property on the bluff with stunning ocean view, Catalina Island views. Easy access for surfing, beach trail. Now is the time to buy.
Prices had declined so much and for this kind of home would usually cost at least $10,000,000.

Sure. If you can afford a vacation home over $4m, why not?

What do you mean exactly? Do you want to purchase the property as an investment property to rent out? Or use as a second home for yourself and to rent out as well? If you're thinking about renting it out, are you thinking about short term rental or long term? Let me know.
Cynthia :)
