I grew up a block away from this property and if I remember correctly this used to be a hardware store back in the 50s and 60s (at least that's what we called it). It was more of a sundry type store that sold all sorts of items (except clothing). We would go in there to pick up some candy or small toy on the way back from Peabody Park during the summer on the way home. Wow, bringing back a lot of memories on this question! Thank you, Joe, for your answer too. I love the link.

You see buildings similar to this all over the older sections of Memphis - Midtown, South Memphis, North Memphis. I can think of at least 2 more nearby this one that have been converted to single family or other use. This was most probably a neighborhood grocery - store below, family lived above. Here's an interesting article that explains the concept: http://www.memphismagazine.com/Memphis-Magazine/November-201…

As to the architect, who knows? These buildings were probably standard for the day with many being built from similar plans. Style- Early 20th Century Commercial?
