Aloha, Tamara... to be best served in this part of the Big Island, I recommend you work with a local Realtor who lives and works in the Puna District. This listing is in either Lava Zone 1 or Lava Zone 2, and there is actually a lot that you should know about this particular neighborhood before you purchase. Will you be visiting the Big Island any time soon? I highly recommend you come to see the property and the neighborhood for yourself - it's nearly impossible for you to get a "sense" of the place over the internet. I personally specialize in property sales on the Kohala "Gold" Coast on the other side of the island, but I do network with some excellent Realtors who work the Puna district and would be happy to make an introduction on your behalf. Warm aloha, Katie Minkus, R(B). katie@hawaiilife.com

FIRST ANSWER

Aloha,
There is a rift that goes down into Pahoa, which is making some neighborhoods harder to sell due to the fact that it can be difficult to impossible to get home owners insurance. I don't know the exact Lava Zone this property is in, but there are maps online that can be google searched. And I'm sure the listing agent would have that information. The economic downturn seems to have hit the Hilo housing market harder than other parts of Hawaii, which makes property there seems like a virtual bargain in comparison. You cannot buy a new house for this price anywhere on Oahu. But the Hilo side does have other concerns to be factored in: coqui frogs, paved vs. unpaved access, cell phone service availability, lava tubes, etc.
