Los Angeles is a huge city with many artsy communities, each with its own price range and features/ benefits. I've lived here my entire life, and worked as a Realtor for the past 33 years on the Westside of Los Angeles (Downtown LA to the ocean, inc. Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, etc.) I've lived in Venice, famously arty, and have represented many clients in the arts who have lived in West Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Silverlake, etc. Neighborhoods continue to change, but I'm confident you can feel at home. What is your price range? Are you a walker, or is your car your best friend? Do you like big, modern conveniences, or do you prefer a small community feel, with boutiques and tiny hole-in-the -wall joints?
I suggest you look at my blog post entitled "Moving to L.A.? Let's Talk Neighborhoods" ( http://www.thebremnergroup.com/moving-to-l-a-lets-talk-neigh
) to give you a really in depth view of some of the local communities.
Then call me; I'd be happy to help.
