Two words: Lake Norman! You name a water related recreation and I'll bet we will have it; boating of all kinds, wind surfing, kayaking, fishing, triathalons, jet skis, sailing, water skiing. With 550 miles of shoreline it is a huge lake with a state park that also offers mountain biking, hiking and a beach area.

You should check out the new US National White Water Rafting Center:

The answer depends on the type of water recreation you want and how big you mean by area. There are two fairly large lakes in the immediate Charlotte area, Lake Norman to the north, Lake Wylie to the south--both part of the Catawba River power generation system. On any weekend both lakes have lots of party boats, ski boats jet skis and fishing boats. I've seen wind-surfers on Wylie in the fall.

Also within a few minutes of Charlotte is the new US National Whitewater Center, an eye-popping man-made whitewater park http://(www.usnwc.org).

If whitewater is your thing, it's available regionally. About a 4-hour drive west is the family-friendly Nantahala. A little further in TN is the Ocoee. Roughly the same distance north in WV you can reach the more challenging New River or in the fall the bone-jarring Gauley.

There are many other nice lakes 1-3 hours away and beautiful canoing nearby on the Catawba or about 2.5 hour away at New River State Park.
