I have spent hours alone in Central Park simply walking around. Mostly during the day but sometimes during the evening. There is a heavy police presence in the park at all times so you are probably as safe in teh park as you are in Times Square on New Year's Eve.

In addition to being extraordinarily beautiful, Central Park is also very safe. With a competent police presence and a high number of user traffic, there really is no place that you can't wander. With that said, the services are cut drastically during the darker hours and vigilance should be observed just like anywhere else. Regardless, there is a lot of action and a consistent flow of new and exciting things to do there. Have a blast!

Central Park is a gorgeous and amazing place. That being said, it is still in New York City. Once you understand the sheer mass of the park, it is easy to recognize areas that are some areas that may not be safe. There are many dark, secluded spots that should not be traversed by those unfamiliar with the park. However, the bulk of the park, the walkways, the loop, paths etc are generally well trafficked and very safe. Like anywhere, in any big city - at night and early morning, when people can hide easier and the population is low - you should be careful. Stay in well-lit areas if you are jogging, maybe find a group to run with. On weekends though, and when the sun is out, I would feel very safe throughout the park.

My experiences (they are limited) is that Central Park is safe as long as you are with someone. Traveling by yourself in any strange area is likely to draw attention and could lead to problems.

I spent many days in Central Park and never had an issue, even when alone, but I recommend a traveling companion as much as possible.
