I have lived in Rocky Mount since 2008, and am a homeowner in the Westry Crossing Subdivision. While the aggregate crime rate for Rocky Mount is higher than municipalities of similar population in North Carolina, criminal activity is much like real estate in general, all dependent on location. Most of the neighborhoods in Rocky Mount, especially to the west of US 301 and in zip code 27804, are very safe. There are even parts of Downtown Rocky Mount with little to no criminal activity.
Home prices are stable in our area, and remain so in most neighborhoods. They didn't go up too much prior to the recession, and they haven't gone down too much. Many of the cheap listings are either due to foreclosure or condition of the house (like what you will find in other areas).

Once you are pre-qualified, decide on how much you can put down. You can use a simple online mortgage calculator to estimate your monthly payment and check on the going loan rates. I find it helpful to look at your monthly payment and decide if it is a comfortable amount for you, because although a bank can tell you what you should be able to afford, it can vary from person to person on spending habits. Check out the amortization schedule that the mortgage calculator will give you. You can see how much you will spend on interest overall. It's very eye opening to compare loans.
