Of course the closer location to the beach is important, but so is the neighborhood upkeep. Another factor to consider is school district. The better the school ratings, the more influx of families with children. The majority of people moving here are from up north, and many with school aged children search first by school district. You may want to buy your primary residence first to take advantage of the great low interest rates for primary residences now. Then after you settle that property and take care of any needed repairs and expenses, you can re-evaluate your financial situation and what you would qualify for as far as purchasing a second home. For non-ocean front I would recommend any of the Myrtle Wood communities, Magnolia Place, Magnolia Pointe and Magnolia North. These are located on the Myrtlewood Golf Course, do well with golf season rentals and are close enough to the beach to attract good summer vacation rentals as well. The onsite management company maintains an excellent pool and activity center.
I would also recommend Barefoot Resorts. You have more options here, great golf, and a beach cabana with shuttle service in the summer. They also have one of the largest swimming pools on the Grand Strand.... more

Hi Kathy, I think you'd like the south end of Myrtle Beach the best. From Surfside Beach to Pawleys Island there are homes located ocean-side of business hwy 17 that don't have HOA fees and would be close enough to the beach to walk, bike or golf cart to the beach.
