I think coming to NC and checking things out for yourself is the best way to start! From what you've said, it sounds like you might like to be around Asheville, since there is a VA hospital there.

I am in the Waynesville/Maggie Valley area which is 30 miles west of Asheville in the Smoky Mountains. We moved here 10 years ago from MI and were drawn to the area by the people and the beauty of the mountains. Waynesville is a very friendly area. You can walk downtown and people actually look at you and say hello! It's a beautiful area.

I actually have a 20 acre parcel for sale right now. It's a little further west, but a beautiful piece of land. You couldn't put a dw there, but could do an off-frame modular or stick-build home. It's off Hwy 19 between Maggie Valley and Cherokee. Let me know if you'd like to see the MLS sheet.
