My husband & I are relocating from Hawaii to Boston in a few months and we are trying to narror down our neighborhood search.

We're both in our upper- twenties and don't have any children. We would like to be close to the commuter line as we will likely only have one car, with a commute of less than 45min., We currently have a condo in Waikiki and are looking for more space both inside & out, probably a townhouse w/ a small yard. A safe area is very important us. Any thoughts on good neighborhoods?? Thanks!

FAIR HOUSING LAWS--real estate professionals are prohibited from “steering”—enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods; so, you should check out demographics on your own to assure your comfort level can be reached. Keep in mind opinions are just that--as far as safety is concerned visit local police departments and ask away.

I have a few questions for you to narrow down what is important to you. Basic rule of thumb, is anything inside the 128/95 beltway is within commuting distance. Price point and your style of living will determine if you would prefer the north, west or southern areas within the beltway.

Without specifics on your price range or size requirement, I would suggest Somerville or South Boston as an option for your move to the Boston area. Though they are not in the Boston proper core neighborhoods of Back Bay, Beacon Hill or South End, which tend to be pricey, both enjoy the convenience of city location, i.e. diversity and commutor convenience with the affordability of more space, parking and yard option. There are so many wonderful towns to choose from that meet your initial criteria, it would be next to impossible for you to do it alone! I am a relocation specialist who can certainly help you "narrow down your search."

Posting your inquiry on Trulia is a great place to start, but nothing will take the place of a real estate professional who will listen to your needs and sort through the inventory to make the most of your valuable time.

I am currently working with a couple from Southern California who fit your description exactly. Out of a possible 60+/- houses that they found on the internet, I was able to narrow down the list to 12. We just put a house on deposit...well within their comfortable budget....and more beautiful than they could ever have imagined!

If you want to be a little bit closer to the city (actually technically in the city) yet still feel like you have the space that suburbia provides I would recommend looking either at West Roxbury or Jamaica Plain. If you want to spend a bit more money, you could get a place right in South Boston and be one T stop (not commuter rail) to Downtown and the financial district.

If you want to talk more about what neighborhood is best for you I would be happy to help. Some things that would help narrow down the search would be where you will be working, what your price range is, what is your desire to be in the city vs. suburbs, etc.

All these towns have public transportation nearby. Whether it be the commuter rail or bus lines. Let me know if I can assit you further in your search.
