If I may, Both answers are right on. http://www.njmovers.com represents members of the new jersey warehouse & movers association. Their members are all licensed and insured. To become a member they must agree to a code of ethics. Some members have achieved even higher standards and they are part of the "circle of excellence" I believe you will be well represented by any mover in this organization.

I serve on the board of directors for the NJWMA and know first hand most of our members. Check out our BBB ratings also, that is a great indication of our work history.

Phone estimates and ballpark quotes are grossly inaccurate. Why? Two main reasons, we can't see the conditions, (what, where, how) and as sales people, the tendency is to quote low.

By law in NJ a mover must come to your house/apartment and do a physical survey. This is considered an interstate move and so is governed by the DOT. Check out their license number online and make sure they are up to date on insurance, etc. A mover is not required to do a physical survey if they are more that 50 miles from you. The question is why would you hire someone who would not even come out and why would you hire someone that far away? Look local to where you are now or where you are moving to, you'll get the best service that way. Ask questions when they come out! Do they charge by weight, hours or volume? What is included? Some will charge for blankets, tape, shrinkwrap, boxes, elevators, etc.

At BD Movers I try to do 2 unique things, a firm price so there are no surprises on moving day, and only my men move you, so no scary people at your house. For further discussions on moving, please check out our blog at http://bdmovers.wordpress.com
