I always recommend to my clients to really know what commute works for you and your family, drive it at the hours that apply to you. Take into account the weather and the potential of getting stuck around Sig Alerts, whether accidents, fires, high speed chases, etc. Once you are behind the wheel feeling and clocking the drive, you will be able to better determine how much time out of your life and away from your family you are truly willing to give up. Commuting can take quite a toll on a person and family, or maybe it fits you.
Just a couple of scenarios: A manager I know transferred his job into an area closer to where he lives because he calculated the hours that were taken from his life and family during the commute. I also had a client do a test drive just from Plum Canyon vs. Valencia to Burbank and they bought in Valencia, because just getting to the freeway seemed like quite a commute from Plum Canyon, and it was a better fit for them.
Pasadena vs. downtown LA are two different commuting territories, as you know the more you are on the freeway the more likely you have some very long commutes due to weather and accidents etc. At least with other forms of transportation you can still read, work or catch up on some sleep on the bus or rail. Take it from some one who gets far more windshield time on the road than you really want to know about.
When choosing an area, visit them often and on different days and times, so you can really see what goes on in those areas and neighborhoods and next door to the house you may purchase. I was recently told my clients were seen outside the house they were going to buy. I was so pleased to hear my clients were doing their home work! Nickle tours are a good way to start doing your home work.
Go to or call the appropriate resources for data. School data is best obtained from the schools themselves as boundaries often change and again visit them and speak to parents with children enrolled there. Crime data is best obtained from the local police departments. Agents are great resources to introduce to you to numerous areas and to give you information about the property, Mello Roos etc., and to aid you in your transaction. Again, this is why you need to see the areas for your self and determine what best fits your commute, needs, comforts and budget.
By working with an agent and doing your homework you will ensure a smart home purchase.

I am not sure where you are living now or what type of neighborhood you are looking for. Canyon Country has pockets that are not that desirable. It would be the closest area out here to San Fernando Valley. There are nice places off the freeway in Canyon Country but also in Stevenson Ranch, some Newhall, & Valencia. Getting to the 5 to the 210 would be the commute for your wife. We have two metrolink areas out here for the commute to LA if that interests you. The one Canyon Country and another in Newhall that borders Valencia.
I am not sure if you have children but schools in the area out here are very important. Whether you have children or not areas in Santa Clarita can very depending schools. Having an agent that knows what schools are excellent and which ones are not is very important. It can make all the difference in resale.

The commute to Dowtown LA about 1hr. to 1 1/2hr. (plus if your taking the train longer). To Pasadena a good 40min drive.
Canyon Country has great areas/ prices much lower than Valencia, or Stevenson Ranch.

Strictly from a commuting perspective there may be better options than Santa Clarita, although as noted in previous postings it really is a great place to live.
I live in Canyon Country and I can tell you whatever you want to know. Most parts of Canyon Country are located very close to HI 14 that makes it easy to go to the Valley. Furthermore one of the three train stations in Santa Clarita is located in Canyon Country.
Shortly I can tell you what I feel the different is between Canyon Country on the eastside and Valencia on the westside (sorry if somebody will be offended) and that is: in Canyon Country there are bigger lots, more dogs, RVs, toys (motorbikes), more nature and less traffic where Valencia is more a citylike area with a lot of traffic, many stores, the Mall, the hospital and many restaurants.
So it is up to you to decide "What do I want?"

If her driving situation is less than optimum, your family will need to weigh the MANY positive attributes of life in the Santa Clarita Valley against the longer commute. To name the top 5 in my view: 1) Schools are excellent, almost across the board. 2) Family-friendly communities 3) Valencia has established a wide variety of entertainment and fine eating venues in the past few years. 4) Your purchasing dollar goes much further than in the SF Valley or SG Valley 5) Air is cleaner than in the aforementioned areas.
