Vjr,

I would rent considering you are moving coast to coast. Why make yourself stay in one area. You may move over there and not like the subdivision you are in and want to change. Get to know an area first then decide if you want to buy.

Check out http://www.Noles-frye.com they have great homes listed in the pineville area for the 180 or less that you are looking for..you get more for your money in the Pineville area verses Alexandria or other areas. Let me know if you have any questions. I live in the Alexandria area.

Vjr, I know nothing about the area you are moving to but when you are asking about renting vs. buying I would say that the most important question to ask is how long you plan on staying there. If you plan on settling in for the long haul, buying sounds like a great option. But if you don't think you are going to stay longer than, say, five years, I would suggest renting.
Good luck with whatever you decide!
